Immigration is Mexican's biggest crime

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people,” said Donald Trump two years ago, during the campaign that took him to the presidential chair. However, how many Mexican citizens are actually involved in crimes in the US?

The illegality of immigration

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for providing consular assistance to Mexicans accussed of a crime abroad. In the last six years, it has provided assistance for 18 types of crimes. Over 52,800 Mexicans have been detained for crimes regarding illegal immigration and reentry after deportation, making it the most common crime of Mexicans in the US.

The list of crimes also includes murder, human smuggling, human trafficking, kidnap, burglary, identity theft and murder, amongst others. A closer look into the three top crimes reveals that, while immigration ones have decreased, other have increased since Trump rose to power in 2017.

What about murder?

First-degree murder, which the killer commits willfully and with premeditation, ranks number 10 in the list of crimes commited by Mexicans in the US.

What about the crimes in the rest of the world?

In the rest of the world, immigration ranks 14 in the list of crimes commited by Mexican citizens. Fraud, assault and domestic violence, amongst others, are more common.
